Kenya · Taita-Taveta County
A vast semi-arid wilderness gazetted in 1948. Home to red elephants, maneless lions, and one of the world's longest lava flows, sitting on the Nairobi–Mombasa corridor.
Tsavo East sits in the former Taru Desert, midway between Nairobi and Mombasa, paired with Tsavo West to form the 22,000 km² Tsavo Conservation Area.
Red elephants coat themselves in volcanic dust as sunscreen. Tsavo's lions are famously maneless — an adaptation to heat and thorny scrub.
