Shimba Hills Day Trip

From Diani: Full Day Shimba hills tour with Sheldrick Falls

Just 33 kilometres south of Mombasa, the coast lifts itself into green hills, cool forest air, and a wilderness that feels far older than the beach resorts below.

Shimba Hills National Reserve is compact, but do not let its size fool you. This pocket of Kwale County guards coastal rainforest, open grassland, woodland, rare wildlife, and one of Kenya’s most elegant antelopes: the sable. Locals often call it the paradise of the sable antelope, which sounds dramatic until you see one standing in the grass with its curved horns and aristocratic posture. Then, frankly, the title feels earned.

The reserve also carries one of the highest densities of African elephants in Kenya, along with giraffes, buffalo, impalas, bushy-tailed mongooses, elephant shrews, monkeys, and a surprising cast of smaller creatures. This day trip blends game viewing, forest hiking, waterfall scenery, sweeping viewpoints, and community conservation into one rich coastal adventure.

07:00 Morning Pick-Up from Diani

Your guide collects you from your Diani accommodation as the day is still fresh and forgiving. The drive to Shimba Hills is short, but the scenery changes quickly. The beach mood slips away. Coconut palms give way to rolling green slopes, village life stirs along the roadside, and the air begins to feel cooler as you climb inland.

Along the way, your guide shares stories of the region, from local culture to the wildlife corridors that connect this reserve with the surrounding communities. Arrival at the park gate is expected around 08:00 AM, depending on traffic and entry formalities.

08:00 Game Drive Through Forest and Grassland

08:00 AM – 10:00 AM
Once inside the reserve, the morning game drive begins. Shimba Hills does not reveal itself all at once. It prefers suspense. A flick of movement in the undergrowth. A horn between the trees. A sudden flash of white tail before the forest swallows it again.

The track winds through patches of coastal rainforest, woodland, and open grassland. Keep watch for sable antelope grazing with quiet dignity, elephants browsing in the thickets, giraffes stepping through the greenery like long-legged diplomats, and buffalo wearing their usual expression of mild disapproval.

Smaller mammals may cross the track in quick bursts: bushy-tailed mongoose, elephant shrew, and other shy forest residents. Birdsong filters through the canopy, layered and restless. For keen birders, this is one of the most rewarding coastal reserves in Kenya.

10:00 Hike to Sheldrick Falls

10:00 AM – 12:00 Noon
At around 10:00 AM, the vehicle gives way to walking boots. The hike to Sheldrick Falls covers approximately 2.5 kilometres each way, making a 5-kilometre round trip. The trail includes steep sections and more than 300 steps, so a moderate level of fitness is recommended.

The path descends through forest alive with shade, birdsong, and the earthy scent of damp leaves. Roots twist across the trail. Sunlight breaks through the canopy in bright patches. The sound of falling water grows louder as you approach.

Then the falls appear. Sheldrick Falls spills down the rock face into a clear plunge pool, cool and inviting after the hike. Take time to rest, photograph the scenery, or step into the water if you wish. After enjoying the falls, begin the return hike back up the trail.

12:00 Lunch at Shimba Green Lodge & Viewpoint Exploration

After the hike, those opting for lunch continue to Shimba Green Lodge, located just outside the reserve in a peaceful natural setting. Here, the pace softens. Sit down to lunch, enjoy the quiet surroundings, and let your legs forgive you for the waterfall trail. Guests may relax by the pool or simply enjoy the lodge atmosphere.

Following lunch, visit Kuranze Viewpoint. From this elevated lookout, Shimba Hills opens in broad green folds beneath you. On clear days, the Indian Ocean glimmers in the distance, a strip of silver-blue beyond the forests and villages. It is the kind of view that makes conversation pause for a moment.

15:00 Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary & Return Run

The journey continues to Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary, a community-owned conservation area created to protect the region’s elephant population and support local people living alongside wildlife. Here, you learn how conservation works beyond park boundaries, where elephants, farms, forests, and communities must share the same landscape.

Spend time observing elephants when sightings allow, and hear about the efforts made to reduce human-wildlife conflict. It is a thoughtful, grounded end to the day, a reminder that the survival of these animals depends on the people who live beside them.

In the late afternoon, around 04:00 PM, begin the drive back toward Diani. The hills recede behind you, the air warms again, and the coast gradually returns. Drop-off at your accommodation is expected around 04:00 PM, subject to road conditions.
