Tsavo East and West 6 days Safari

Mombasa → Tsavo East → Ziwani Conservancy → Tsavo West → Amboseli → Salt Lick Lodge → Mombasa

Where Every Destination
Tells a Different Story

Six days. Three legendary wilderness regions. Countless moments that refuse to stay inside a photograph.

This safari sweeps you from Kenya's sun-drenched coast into the vast, untamed country of Tsavo and Amboseli, where red dust hangs in the air, elephant herds carve paths across open plains, and Mount Kilimanjaro rises above the horizon like a giant keeping watch over the land.

Track Tsavo East's famous red elephants across endless savannahs. Venture into the secluded wilderness of Ziwani Private Sanctuary, where darkness reveals a different cast of characters and every rustle in the bush sparks curiosity. Wander through the dramatic volcanic landscapes of Tsavo West, home to black rhinos and crystal-clear springs. Then arrive in Amboseli, where some of Africa's largest tuskers roam beneath the shadow of Kilimanjaro's snow-covered summit. Your journey concludes at the iconic Salt Lick Safari Lodge, where wildlife gathers at illuminated waterholes beneath your room.

Your Six-Day Itinerary

Day 01 Mombasa to Tsavo East National Park

The day begins before the coast has fully shaken off its sleep. At 06:00 hrs, your guide collects you from your hotel in Mombasa, and the city slowly slips behind as the road stretches inland toward Kenya's largest protected wilderness. After approximately 140 kilometres, you arrive at Bachuma Gate, the threshold to Tsavo East National Park. A brief stop offers time for refreshments before the real adventure begins. The landscape changes almost instantly. Red earth. Acacia trees twisted by wind and time. Wide horizons that seem to stretch forever.

Wildlife viewing starts from the moment you enter the park. You may spot Tsavo's famous red elephants, their skin stained crimson by the region's iron-rich soil. Buffalo graze beneath scattered trees. Baboons patrol the roadside with all the confidence of local politicians. Gerenuk stand upright to browse from thorny branches, while antelope move through the grass like drifting shadows. Arrive at your lodge or camp in time for lunch, served against a backdrop of sweeping wilderness views.

As the afternoon cools, venture back into the park. Waterholes become gathering places where animals arrive in a steady procession to drink. Cameras click. Binoculars rise. Dust glows gold in the lowering sun. Return to camp as evening settles across the plains. Dinner is served beneath a sky crowded with stars. Overnight in Tsavo East.

Highlight: Crimson Soil Transitions & Golden Hour Waterhole Processions
Day 02 Tsavo East to Ziwani Private Sanctuary

The bush awakens early. Predators still linger in the cool morning air, and the first game drive of the day offers a chance to witness the park at its most active. Lions may be returning from a night's hunt while elephants emerge from the shadows to greet the sunrise. After breakfast, depart Tsavo East and continue toward Tsavo West, arriving at Ziwani Camp in time for lunch.

The afternoon introduces a different side of safari life. Nestled within a private conservancy, Ziwani Private Sanctuary offers a quieter, more intimate wilderness experience. There are no crowds here. Just open landscapes, birdsong, and the feeling that nature has the final say. Bird enthusiasts will find plenty to admire, with more than 400 recorded species filling the air with colour and sound.

As daylight fades, the atmosphere shifts. The evening game drive ventures into the sanctuary after dark, when nocturnal creatures begin their nightly routines. Bush babies leap between branches. Genets move with ghostlike grace. Civets patrol the undergrowth. Somewhere in the darkness, a hyena laughs at a joke nobody else heard. If fortune smiles, you may even encounter a leopard slipping silently through the night. Dinner and overnight at Ziwani.

Highlight: Midnight Tracking Operations & Ghostlike Genets in the Shadows
Day 03 Exploring Tsavo West National Park

After breakfast, continue into Tsavo West National Park, a region shaped by volcanic forces and dramatic geological history. The scenery feels entirely different from Tsavo East. Rocky ridges rise from the earth. Ancient lava flows cut through the landscape. Dense vegetation hides wildlife until the last possible moment. Enjoy game viewing en route to your lodge before settling in for lunch.

The afternoon safari includes a visit to the renowned Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary, one of Kenya's most successful conservation areas for the critically endangered black rhino. Patience often pays handsomely here. A dark shape emerges from the brush. A powerful horn catches the sunlight. Few wildlife encounters carry the same sense of privilege as watching a black rhino move through its protected home.

The game drive continues across the park, searching for lion, leopard, cheetah, giraffe, elephant, eland, waterbuck, gazelle, and countless bird species. Return to your lodge as the evening sky turns amber and violet. Dinner and overnight in Tsavo West.

Day 04 Tsavo West to Amboseli National Park

Rise early for one final game drive through Tsavo West before breakfast. The morning journey toward Amboseli includes a stop at one of the park's most fascinating natural attractions: Mzima Springs. Fed by underground streams flowing from the Chyulu Hills, these crystal-clear waters create an oasis in the middle of an otherwise dry landscape. At the underwater viewing chamber, you can watch hippos drifting through the water and crocodiles gliding silently below the surface. It's a perspective few wildlife experiences can match.

From here, continue toward Amboseli National Park. Then comes the moment everyone waits for. If the weather cooperates, Mount Kilimanjaro appears on the horizon. Massive. Snow-capped. Almost unreal. Arrive at your lodge for lunch before heading out on an afternoon game drive.

Amboseli has earned its reputation as the land of giants. Elephant herds roam the plains, many carrying some of the largest tusks remaining in Africa. They move with surprising gentleness for animals of such immense size. Beyond the elephants, watch for wildebeest, zebra, gazelle, hartebeest, kudu, lions, hippos in the swamps, and a rich variety of birdlife. All the while, Kilimanjaro provides a backdrop that makes every photograph look as though it belongs on a postcard. Dinner and overnight in Amboseli.

Highlight: Sub-Surface Mzima Spring Window Loops & Giant Tuskers
Day 05 Amboseli to Salt Lick Safari Lodge

Before sunrise, head into the park while the world is painted in shades of silver and blue. This is the finest hour for photography in Amboseli. The air is crisp, the light is soft, and Kilimanjaro often reveals itself in perfect clarity before clouds gather around its summit. Elephants cross the plains. Crowned cranes call from the wetlands. The mountain glows pink beneath the first touch of sunlight.

After breakfast, depart Amboseli and travel toward the Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary. Your destination is one of Kenya's most distinctive safari lodges. Salt Lick Safari Lodge rises above a network of waterholes on elevated stilts, its circular rooms connected by open walkways that seem suspended above the wilderness.

After lunch and some time to settle in, find a comfortable viewing point and let nature handle the entertainment schedule. Animals arrive throughout the afternoon and evening. Elephants drink beneath the lodge. Buffalo gather in groups. Zebra and giraffe step cautiously into the open. As darkness deepens, the floodlit waterholes attract an entirely different audience. You may not even need to leave your room. Safari often comes directly to your balcony. Dinner and overnight at Salt Lick Safari Lodge.

Highlight: Pink Dawn Alpenglow Passages & Balcony Waterhole Observation
Day 06 Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary to Mombasa

Your final morning begins with one last game drive through the sanctuary. The bush seems determined to offer a memorable farewell. Perhaps a herd of elephants crossing the track. Perhaps a giraffe silhouetted against the sunrise. Perhaps one final photograph that becomes the favourite of the entire trip. Return to the lodge for breakfast and a chance to savour the last moments of your safari.

After check-out, begin the journey back to Mombasa. Enjoy wildlife viewing along the way as you leave the sanctuary behind and travel toward the coast. Arrive in Mombasa during the afternoon, carrying home more than photographs. The scent of rain on red earth. The distant rumble of elephants. The sight of Kilimanjaro towering above the plains. Some memories refuse to fade. This marks the end of your six-day journey through Tsavo East, Tsavo West, Amboseli, and Taita Hills, a remarkable stretch of Kenya where wild landscapes still set the rules and every day brings a new story.
