Mombasa / Diani → Tsavo East → Amboseli → Taita Hills / Salt Lick → Mombasa / Diani
Four days. Three iconic safari destinations. Endless opportunities for unforgettable wildlife encounters.
This safari unfolds across some of Kenya's most celebrated wilderness areas, from the vast red plains of Tsavo East to the breathtaking landscapes of Amboseli beneath Mount Kilimanjaro, before concluding at the famous Salt Lick Lodge, where wildlife gathers just steps from your room.
Each destination offers its own character. Tsavo East delivers raw wilderness and legendary red elephants. Amboseli serves up postcard-worthy views of Africa's highest mountain alongside extraordinary wildlife concentrations. Taita Hills and Salt Lick provide intimate encounters around waterholes where animals arrive as naturally as guests at a well-known meeting place.
Expect spectacular scenery, remarkable wildlife viewing, and moments that remind you why safari remains one of the world's most extraordinary travel experiences.
Your adventure begins with an early morning departure from your hotel in Mombasa or Diani. As the coastline slips away behind you, the landscape gradually transforms into the wild, untamed terrain that defines Kenya's interior. Travel along the Mombasa-Nairobi Highway toward Tsavo East National Park, entering through Bachuma Gate. The moment you cross into the park, the atmosphere changes. The roads turn red with iron-rich dust, acacia trees stretch across the horizon, and every patch of bush seems to conceal a story. Game viewing begins immediately.
Tsavo East is famous for its immense elephant herds, often coated in red dust that gives them an almost mythical appearance. Buffalo graze across open plains, giraffes browse among thorny trees, and zebras stand in small family groups, their stripes creating optical puzzles against the grassland. Enjoy a game drive en route to your lodge or camp, arriving in time for check-in and lunch.
After a short rest, head back into the wilderness for an afternoon safari. The changing light paints the landscape in rich golden tones, while wildlife becomes increasingly active. Lions may appear resting beneath scattered trees, while antelopes move cautiously through the bush, always aware that something higher on the food chain may be watching. As the sun begins its slow descent, return to the lodge or camp for dinner and an overnight stay surrounded by the sounds of the African wilderness.
Rise early and enjoy breakfast before setting off on a final game drive through Tsavo East. Morning is a magical time in the bush. The air feels fresh, the light is soft, and animals are often at their most active. As you leave the park, keep your camera close. Safari has a habit of saving some of its best surprises for the final moments.
Continue north toward Amboseli National Park, a destination celebrated for its extraordinary scenery and remarkable wildlife viewing. The landscape opens into vast plains framed by the snow-capped summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. The mountain often hides behind clouds like a celebrity avoiding photographers, only to reveal itself when conditions are perfect. Arrive at your lodge in time for lunch and a chance to relax.
Later in the afternoon, venture into the park for a game drive across Amboseli's famous open plains. Wildlife sightings here are often exceptional thanks to the sparse vegetation. Elephants move gracefully beneath Kilimanjaro's towering presence, while lions, giraffes, buffalo, zebras, and a variety of antelope roam the grasslands. As daylight softens, the mountain often glows in shades of silver and pink, creating one of Africa's most memorable safari backdrops. Return to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.
After breakfast, check out and enjoy a final game drive as you depart Amboseli. The morning offers another opportunity to soak in the beauty of the plains and perhaps enjoy a last glimpse of Kilimanjaro standing proudly above the horizon. Travel onward to the Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary, arriving at the famous Salt Lick Safari Lodge in time for lunch. The lodge itself is unlike any other. Raised on stilts above the sanctuary, it overlooks a busy waterhole that acts as a gathering point for wildlife throughout the day and night.
After lunch, set out on an afternoon game drive within the sanctuary. Though smaller than Tsavo or Amboseli, Taita Hills offers excellent wildlife viewing and a more intimate safari experience. Elephants wander between watering points, antelope graze in the open, and predators occasionally emerge from the bush in search of opportunity.
As evening approaches, return to the lodge and settle into one of the best wildlife-viewing seats imaginable. Below, animals arrive at the waterhole in a steady procession. Elephants drink deeply and splash themselves with water. Buffalo approach cautiously. Smaller animals wait their turn with varying degrees of patience. The scene unfolds naturally, requiring no script and no audience, though visitors are more than happy to watch. Enjoy dinner while the wilderness continues its nightly performance just beyond the lodge. Overnight at Salt Lick Safari Lodge.
Wake to the sight of wildlife gathering around the waterhole as the first rays of sunlight spread across the sanctuary. After breakfast, enjoy a final morning game drive through Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary. The cool morning hours often produce excellent wildlife sightings, providing one last opportunity to savour the excitement of safari. Soon it is time to begin the journey back to the coast.
As the landscape gradually changes and the Indian Ocean draws closer, memories of the past four days linger vividly. The red elephants of Tsavo. The towering silhouette of Mount Kilimanjaro. The quiet thrill of spotting wildlife in its natural habitat. The evening gatherings at Salt Lick's waterhole. Arrive in Mombasa or Diani later in the day and transfer to your hotel, carrying home photographs, stories, and the unmistakable feeling that Africa has a way of staying with you long after the safari ends.
