Overview
Shimba Hills National Reserve is a small reserve just 15 kilometers off the coast. The beautiful reserve is characterized by coastal rainforest, soft grassland, and adventurous woodland. This spot is popular among tourists because it is a simple deep dive into wildlife and culture, with warm weather and stunning scenery.
Game Drive
The first thing you will experience is the game drive. This is best enjoyed with snacks and a few friends joining your trip. The ranger will take you around the park to meet the different mammal species that live in this park.
On your drive, expect to see majestic herds of elephants, antelopes, waterbucks, hyenas, warthogs, giraffes, baboons, the Masai giraffes, zebras, ostriches, and big cats like lions and leopards. Look out for the endemic sable antelope, an endangered species worth looking forward to when visiting the park.
Day 1: Lake Nakuru National Park
Day 1 starts with departure from Nairobi, heading to Lake Nakuru National Park. The road to Nakuru is quite scenic, so you will catch beautiful views if you can stay awake. Your driver will stop at the viewpoint so you can see the rift and grab a few handmade souvenirs.
Upon arrival, you will secure your accommodation and freshen up. After lunch, you will head on the afternoon game drive to meet the many birds and animals. They are distributed all over the park, surrounding the lake.
Sheldrick Falls
The Sheldrick falls are named after David Sheldrick in the 1940s when the explorer first came across them. The Mijikenda, however, were the primary inhabitants of this area but avoided the space due to wild animals. But with modernization and protection, Sheldrick Falls is now a great place to visit.
After a short hike, you will reach the falls, which tumble 25 meters to a clean, clear pool of blue and rocks.
It is a loveable place to have a picnic, or you could go swimming. The afternoon weather is delightfully warm. However, we only encourage professional and brave swimmers to participate. The waters can be demanding despite their charming, inviting nature.
You can take as many pictures of the waterfall while listening to the musical rush of water with a background of chirping birds as they fly overhead.
Picnic And Viewing Sites
And lastly, one of the beloved activities here is viewing the stunning nature and enjoying a meal at one of the many picnics sites. Your guide will take you to a good picnic site, that is, if you do not picnic by the waterfall.
The highest point in the park is Pengo Hill, and it is the perfect place to get a panoramic view of the area. You may also go to Marere Dam, another lovely viewing point with a water body that invites various animals. It is a great spot where you can glimpse multiple animals.
You could also go to the Makadara picnic site for your picnic or head to the Giriama point of stunning views of the park and surrounding Kwale County. Ocean viewpoint is another good location for catching stunning views.
The trip will end with a drive back to your accommodations. As you can see, this is an interactive trip worthy of a second visit. Be sure to book your travels with us. We will guide you to the best hotspots around the coast and other counties. We hope to see you again soon.
